Another thing that we have learned on our bike vacations is that maps do not always tell the whole story. How often have you traced a fantastic route on the map beforehand, to find out that what was indicated as a secondary road turned out to be jammed with traffic. Or, even worse, when dealing with old maps you may find that the road has become less than a track! This can often be the case in Italy where some maps may look new, instead they have not been updated in the last 25 years!.

For these reasons, on our bike vacations, we often opted for a self-guided tour. But unfortunately, we have found that most self-guided tours are always all-encompassing pre-packaged tours, and often too expensive. Moreover, half of the services included in packages are not essential for every biker. This is not friendly, but it is typical of tour operators whose main job is to create packages.
